Hey White Ladies, Let’s Pull Our Heads Out!

Can we have a talk? White lady to white lady?

I hope that, like me, you’re mad as a hornet about Senate Bill 8 in Texas and the fact that the Supreme Court let it slide into the A-OK box under cover of darkness and now women have almost no access to abortion in the state of Texas. Worse still, other states are working on pulling the same shenanigans and hey, most people don’t even mention that little addendum about being able to sue anyone accused of abetting rape for $10,000 bounty.

A women’s march and some online activism can solve everything, right? White ladies are organizing ALL women, but hang on, why are we getting such hard side-eye from Black women? Now is the time for unity!

Some of us have been working to raise awareness about reproductive justice for a long time. And we are MORE than white ladies. Some of us are Jewish or Armenian or part-Indigenous. Some of us are queer or disabled or fat or old. We occupy multiple and intersecting positions of oppression, dang it! The thing is, if we look white, or we were raised as white women, chances are strong that this is a key part of our identity that gives us power. We may not be capable of seeing the intricate ways that whiteness gives us privilege and that we enact allegiance to it. You can…
