Jameson, your response doesn’t respond to the points in the article. Of course life doesn’t prepare you for the scary stuff that’s coming. And sure, humans are resilient. After being knocked on our asses, we usually find our way back up. I don’t want a classroom in which some people are in the conversation and others are struggling to pick themselves up because something really difficult just knocked them down. I want a room full of people who are capable of LEARNING THE MATERIAL, engaging deeply with topics that may indeed, outside of the classroom, catch them off guard. The thing is, getting students ready to learn by providing a respectful environment in which folks are prepared for the work at hand is not that difficult. A respectful, well organized environment where folks know what’s coming is pragmatic. It keeps folks IN the discussion, rather than bracing themselves for the next surprise.
